To ensure your soy wax candles burn cleanly and last as long as possible, here are some care tips:
1. Trim the Wick
- Before each use, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6mm). This helps prevent the flame from getting too large, reduces soot, and helps the candle burn more evenly.
- Use a wick trimmer or scissors to ensure a clean cut.
2. Burning Time
- Avoid burning your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. If you burn it too long, the wick may burn too hot, and the candle may produce excess soot or a poor burn.
- Soy candles have a memory burn, so it’s best to let the candle burn long enough during the first use (about 2–3 hours) to melt the wax all the way to the edges. This prevents tunneling (wax melting only in the center) and ensures even burning in future uses.
3. Keep the Candle in a Draft-Free Area
- To prevent uneven burning and flickering, keep your candle away from drafts, fans, or air conditioning vents.
- The ideal environment is calm and steady, which allows the wax to melt evenly across the surface.
4. Let the Wax Pool Completely
- During the first burn, allow the entire surface of the candle to melt to the edge. This prevents tunneling and ensures the candle burns evenly for the next use.
- Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin, so it will melt more quickly. Give it time to reach a full melt pool.
5. Store Your Candles Properly
- Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat. Exposure to heat can cause the wax to soften or discolor, and sunlight can cause the fragrance oils to dissipate.
- Keep your candles in a dust-free area or covered, as soy wax can attract dust particles when it's not burning.
6. Avoid Moving Candles While Burning
- Never move a lit candle. Soy wax is softer than other waxes, and if you disturb it while it’s burning, it can cause the wax to spill or the wick to shift.
7. Extinguishing the Flame
- Instead of blowing out the candle, use a candle snuffer to avoid wax splatter and to ensure the wick doesn't smolder.
- If you do blow it out, do it gently to prevent wax from splashing, and let the wick cool before relighting.
8. Clean the Candle Holder
- After the candle has completely cooled, you can clean the container by wiping it with a paper towel to remove any leftover wax. For a deeper clean, place the container in the freezer for a few hours to harden the wax, then pop it out and wipe down the container.
By following these tips, you'll be able to enjoy your soy wax candles safely and maximize their burn time!
